Math Fiesta - 106th birth memorial celebration of Prof K A Krishnamurthy

The 106th birth memorial celebration of Prof K A Krishnamurthy was held on 9th August 2019 .The UG and PG department of Mathematics conducted  one day inter-collegiate fest -‘MATH FIESTA’ for the PU and UG students of various colleges respectively.

The fest began by the inauguration ceremony which included a traditional formal function in the Fr Robert Sequeria hall in the LCRI Block. HOD of UG department of mathematics Ms Priya Monteiro welcomed the gathering. The dignitaries for the function were Dr Kedukodi Babushri Srinivas, as the Chief Guest who addressed the students with regard to the theme Learning Mathematics from nature. Principal Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ presided over the function and gave us the message to get inspired from the great mathematicians. The formal function ended with a vote of thanks given by HOD of PG Department of Mathematics Ms Suma Devi P.G.
After a break the Guest of honour Dr Kedukodi Babushri Srinivas, Associate professor, Department of Mathematics, Manipal Institute of Technology, MAHE gave a talk on ‘Learning Mathematics from Nature’, with a very young and fresh idea so that young minds could resonate with it. He gave different instances of nature where mathematics is used in it.

After the guest lecture, all participants geared up and were ready for the competition. There was a total of six events, which included a combination of group and individual events, to start of Hanky Brains, two participants made a team, they were challenged through Quiz on Mathematical concepts followed  by the questionnaire and visual rounds, next, Math Run, in this math hunt event hints were given as puzzles on general math topics and logical reasoning where participants had to find the next clues in different places. Next, Exponential Estres, a well organised stress interview where the students had to handle the stress while they played the role of given Mathematician; Art Matic, one of the most eye catching events as individual participants had to create an art with the help of paints and brushes using various mathematical signs, next Time Lapse, This event tested the problem solving skills, speed, accuracy and math knowledge and also included fun filled rounds. Finally the finale event Group Theory where five students participated in order to develop team spirit and puzzle solving skills.

The valedictory function was presided over by the Director of the Xavier Block Dr John E. D’Silva. Dr John E. D’silva motivated the students through his message which emphasised on the values learnt from the life of the eminent teacher Prof K A Krishnamurthy. The entire fest was coordinated by Ms Melvita Baretto (staff coordinator) and Ms Thejitha M P (student coordinator). Lourdes Central School won the overall championship and Poornaprajna PU College were the runners up.
