Applied Economics
THE DEPARTMENT

PG DEPT OF ECONOMICS established in the year 2008 offers a two year PG Programme in  M. A. in Applied Economics. The curriculum is designed to provide academic competence in the areas of both theoretical and applied economics, enhancing the professional objectives of students. The core courses establish the foundation necessary for the application of the theoretical and empirical tools of economic analysis to the areas of specialization, namely:  Financial Economics. The course is designed to reflect new developments in the discipline of Economics and is closely oriented towards the professional employment market in India and abroad.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The duration of M.A. in Applied Economics shall be 4 semesters (2 years) of 18 weeks each. The Curriculum is multidisciplinary and includes courses on Economic Theory, Management Principles, Quantitative Techniques, Financial Economics and  Research Methods.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Candidates who have passed the three year:
  • B.A degree examination with economics / foreign trade / international Business or business economics or banking as one of the optional subjects.
  • B.Com degree examination with economics / business economics / managerial economics and banking as compulsory papers.
  • B. B. M. / B.B.A / B.B.S./ B.M.S. or any other degree as equivalent there to with economics / business economics / managerial  economics and banking as compulsory papers / subjects. 
  • B. A / B.Com / B.B. A. / B.S. in Foreign Trade or International Business or Business Economics or Banking   or B.Com – E- Commerce are eligible  with 45 %  and for  SC / ST / Category –I candidates  40 % in aggregate including languages and Group III subjects.
Note:  Candidates who have passed B.A. Ed. degree examination (Regional College Scheme) are eligible for the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category-I candidates) marks in the relevant subjects and fulfill other conditions specified for the programme.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

The medium of instruction is  ENGLISH.

CREDIT BASED SYSTEM

The programme follows Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total of 100 credits. Each semester will have 25 credits.  One choice based course of 5 credits shall be offered in the Third Semester of the programme within the faculty or across the faculty. Every course comprises of lecture – seminar - assignment – self-study – continuous assessment schedule. The minimum number of credits to be earned for the award of the degree is 100.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME:

I. RURAL EXPOSURE PROGRAMME:  A week long Rural Exposure programme is included as a part of Curriculum before the completion of IV Semester and will be recorded in the IV Semester Marks card. It is compulsory for all students pursuing PG Courses in St Aloysius College.
II. GUEST LECTURES  
The Department oragnises Special Guest Lectures inviting eminent scholars from academics and industry to give additional input in learning:
III.  SOFT SKILLS TRAINING
The overall development of the students is enhanced through various soft skills training programmes.
IV. EDUCATIONAL TOUR To expose students’ to practical situations, the Department organizes educational tours to various industries, research institutes, libraries etc.
V. PROJECT WORK
Project work is a platform that calls upon the application of the collective knowledge gained throughout the course. It provides opportunities to students to learn practical aspects that cannot be taught in a class room.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
  • To prepare for a wide range of professional careers in Banking and Financial Services, NGOs and Development Institutions, Government Services, Research and Consulting Firms, Foreign Trade Sector, etc.
  • To equip students with knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of economics and business, which will help them to become responsible leaders in their chosen fields. 
  • To establish a foundation for Ph. D studies for students who plan to continue their education and research.
  • To prepare students who are seeking careers in government service.
  • To lay the foundation for teaching for students who plan to enter the profession of teaching.
CAREER PROSPECTS:

The PG degree programme M.A. in Applied Economics with specialization in Financial Economics prepares a student for a wide range of professional careers. Some of them are:

A. TEACHING: For PUC, Central Schools as PGT Teacher, Degree Courses like B.A, B.Com, BBM, BABL, BHM etc, P. G. Courses in Economics , M.B.A. and Allied Courses and Professional Courses.

B.  HIGHER STUDIES: On completion of M.A in Applied Economics students can pursue higher studies like M.Phil, Ph.D , etc. Clearing of JRF examination will enable the students eligible for scholarships during their Ph.D studies.

C. RESEARCH: On completion of Ph. D. as Research Assistant, Research Associate, Research Coordinator, Economic Researcher, Project Fellow Director of Research Projects. There are over 25 national level research institutes in India under the purview of ICSSR. Several Universities and Institutions of Higher learning also provide opportunities for research.

D. EXCLUSIVE GOVERNMENT SERVICES : Indian Economic Service (www:upsc.gov.in), Planning Commission , Directorate  of Economics and Statistics, National Sample Survey Organisation,  State and central government needs various economic experts for Policy Making, Planning, Finance, Agriculture , Rural Development, Urban Affairs, Population and Family Welfare, Environment, Industry, Commerce, International Trade , Public Finance, etc.

E. INSTITUTIONS: As Economic Advisor,  Econometrician, Economist, Researcher, Consultant, Executive, Analyst, project coordinator / head, Forecaster in various national and International institutions and organisations like– C.S.O., NSSO , NCAER, CMIE, FCI,  World Bank, I M F, O. BANKING: In RBI as Officer Grade B, as specialized Officer or Economist in NABARD, SIDBI, EXIM, NHB, Development Financial Institutions – IFC, SFC, ECGC, IL&FS, IDFC ,etc, Nationalised Banks, Private  Commercial Banks / Foreign Banks, Cooperative Banks, Mutual Funds, Stock Markets, Merchant Banks, Venture Capital, Credit rating Agencies, Insurance Companies – GIC, LIC , Private Insurance companies.

G. ECONOMIST: Economists conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends, and develop forecasts on a wide variety of issues. They also develop methods for obtaining the data they need and prepare and present reports, including tables and charts, on research results. Some economists also perform economic analysis for the media.

H.  MEDIA AND JOURNALISM: As a Freelance Writer , Reporter, Sub –Editor, Section Editor, Economic Editor, Editor of Economic Journals / Papers / Magazines , Presenter in TV / shows , Writing and Editing Books etc.

I. OTHERS: Can join Central or State Governments’ Administrative services by taking  Competitive Examinations conducted  by UPSC and State PSC, SSC and other Government Recruitment Agencies. Further students can pursue higher studies like M.Phil, Ph.D, etc.

Note: Four important areas of Economics will be offered as SEMINAR COURSES. Each student is required to present one seminar in each semester on a given topic from the seminar course given as under. Department also organises Special Guest Lectures on these courses.
