Certificate Courses
Department of Biochemistry
PG Department of Biochemistry/M.Sc Biochemistry, St. Aloysius College offers a practical laboratory based two year course in Biochemistry. The course is aimed to apply the molecular approaches of chemistry to the vast variety of biological systems. M.Sc Biochemistry, St. Aloysius College offers a syllabus with emphasis on basic concepts of the life and reason for various life processes. The syllabus helps the students to qualify in various National & International Entrance exams for availing research fellowships in life sciences such as UGC/CSIR NET Exams, GATE, ICMR Exams etc.

Recognizing the tremendous opportunities in the field of science, St. Aloysius College ventured into the field of Biochemistry as the first college in Dakshina Kannada District to start an undergraduate course in the year 1999.  When autonomy status was awarded to St. Aloysius College, one of the major steps taken was to start the M.Sc. Biochemistry course affiliated to Mangalore University in the year 2008.

Msc Biochemistry/PG Department of Biochemistry, St. Aloysius College has well equipped laboratories to do the two year M.Sc course & also to do research work in the field of Biochemistry.  It also has well ventilated class rooms set for LCD, OHP and black board teaching. The M.Sc Biochemistry department along with its general chemistry laboratory has animal & plant tissue culture facilities, animal house facility and good library facility. M.Sc students of Biochemistry Department have free access to utilize all the facilities of the department under the guidance of efficient faculty. M.Sc Biochemistry Department has faculty experienced both in teaching & research. Along with regular teaching they have guided several post graduate students to complete the projects efficiently. They have been awarded with UGC minor research projects. One of the faculty is with Ph.D, one with M.Phil. Three faculties are working for their Ph.D.

Biochemists work at all levels and with all types of biological organisms, ranging from microbes to man. Biochemistry offers the tremendous challenge of seeking to understand the most fundamental of life's processes at the molecular level, and to utilise this knowledge for the benefit of mankind.  This is a very exciting time to study biochemistry because so many important discoveries are being made each day in this field.  There is a large demand for scientists - the Government wants more scientists and technologists in all walks of life to take advantage of recent advances in knowledge. A Masters in Biochemistry can prepare one for diverse careers including teaching and research in basic science, in hospitals and medical fields, in the food and drink industries, in agriculture and in pharma industries.

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION

Candidates shall have studied Biochemistry/Chemistry as optional/major/special subject in any two of the following subjects-Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Pharmacognocy and Chemistry as major/ optional/ minor/ subsidiary subject at the undergraduate level.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the Masters in Biochemistry program in MSc. Biochemistry, St. Aloysius College, is to provide an understanding of the molecular structure and function of biomolecules and apply the knowledge to all the processes in living things. The scheme of syllabus, instruction, examination, evaluation etc., has been prepared with the following objectives in mind.
  • To provide state of art knowledge and skills in the field of Biochemistry.
  • To generate manpower trained in Biochemistry suited to meet the needs of the research institutions/industry / academia.
  • To have a positive impact on human and animal health, agriculture and environment in the region.
  • To have 100 % placement for all the students who take up this course.
OUT LINE OF THE COURSE CURRICULUM

The curriculum of the M.Sc Biochemistry course consists of four semesters which includes Lecture-Tutorial-Practical-self study schedule. Each semester comprises of eighteen weeks duration, including instructions and internal examinations. The student has to undertake 192 hours of theory instructions and 256 hours of hands on experiments in a semester. Students must take up a research project work on any relevant topic which is evaluated as part of the course during final year. The M.Sc Biochemistry course curriculum includes Assignments on related topics of syllabus, Class presentation, Seminars, workshops, Study tours, Poster and Oral Presentation, Guest lecture sections, Group Discussions and life skills.

The assessment is based on knowledge, intelligence, application, understanding of the concept of the subject and creativity. The overall performance of a student is indicated by two indices; SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative grade point average).
In addition to classroom teaching the following methods are used to facilitate learning and training of the students.
  1. Tutorials: are held for 1 hour duration, at least twice a month. The objective is to provide an opportunity to the students to have interaction with the teachers and gain maximum   information on the subject.
  2. Wall journal: Students maintain a wall journal where all important research findings, job opportunities, creativity etc are displayed
  3. Biochemistry association:  All the students are members of Biochemistry association- a platform for show casing their talents- curricular and co-curricular.
  4. Students have to undergo compulsory rural exposure camp in order to sensitize them to the needs of the society.
M.Sc Biochemistry/PG Department of Biochemistry, St. Aloysius College regularly conducts scientific conferences, intercollegiate and interdepartmental cultural programs/ science based competitions through the association. The students are encouraged to participate in various events of other colleges also.
