Department of Journalism - Master of Communication and Media Studies
Communication is as old as human beings themselves. Mass communication is communication of mass generated messages for mass audiences often reaching all over the world. Mass communication benefits millions of people who seek information on a variety of issues and topics.

Mass communication is the word used to describe the academic study of diverse ways by which individuals and units convey information to large sections of the population all at once through mass media i.e. newspaper, radio, TV, magazines and films. Journalism is a discipline of collecting, analyzing, verifying and representing information regarding current events, trends, issues and people. Those who practice journalism are known as journalists. Mass communication has emerged as a practical career choice for a huge number of youth in the recent years.

Master in Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) is a two year full time program offered by St. Aloysius College (autonomous). The course is a healthy mix of theoretical and practical approach – with both getting equal emphasis. Along with classroom teaching, MCMS employs various on-field activities like real-time news reporting, on-field TV news coverage, developing actual advertising campaigns, etc.

Students get industry level exposure with industry trained staff and equipment. For specialized expertise, we have a host of professionals belonging to the media industry from various parts of the country providing  guest lectures / interaction sessions with students throughout the year.

Our Master in Communication and Media Studies course is designed to offer the best of theoretical and practical knowledge by covering all aspects of the media, besides the specializations.

Through various media related activities spread across two years, students are trained to evolve as consummate media professionals by our faculty, who have the required industry exposure and ties.

The Master in Communication and Media Studies course offers

During specialization, students are required to work on their dissertation. Besides, they will also do their full-pledged projects in their specialised areas. In addition, students are also required to undergo 10-weeks internships in various media houses, advertising agencies, PR houses and production houses.

Department of Mass Communication is equipped with good infrastructure. Students get the required hands-on experience in various technical aspects of media through a television studio with PD cameras and Apple Mac (FCP) for video editing. For daily broadcast learning experience, students have a Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM, managed by the Dept of Mass Communication.

Practical Industry Exposure:
The Department has tie-ups with local television channels in Mangalore. The students produce content including weekly news bulletins, short features and other programs for telecast to a wide audience on the channel.

Students also provide content for news portals adding depth to their CV. Department, along with the students, organizes various seminars, workshops and film festivals that helps in uplifting quality of their learning.

Dr. Richard Rego SJ, Head of the Department
Rev Dr. Richard Rego SJ heads the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism at St Aloysius College. Besides clearing UGC-NET,  he holds a Ph.D in Cinema from Pune University and M.S. in Communication from Bangalore University and has done his PGDCA from St Joseph’s College Bangalore. He is the Founder and Director of Community Radio SARANG 107.8FM. He has been teaching Mass Media at St. Aloysius College since 2000.

He has published two study material books, “Working for Media” (Eng) and “Madhyama Baravanige” (Kan) for Mangalore University. His documentary film on 33 Konkani communities and a research book, “Suvarna Karntakanth Konkani Lok”, for Karnataka State Konkani Sahitya Academy adds to his credits. He has secured a Library Fellowship from Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore. He is presently working on the Major Content Production Project for National Mission on Education (Higher Education), Ministry of HRD, Delhi. He has been a resource person on Community Broadcasting at national level at Delhi, Goa, Mumbai and Karnataka. Regular contributor to various Konkani periodicals and English-Kannada dailies and has done TV (DD) interviews and Radio (AIR) programs.
 
Mr. Vishal Nayak
Teaches Corporate Communication, Brand Management, Advertising and Markerting  Communications. He holds a PG degree in Mass Communication with the specialization in Broadcast Media from Manipal Institute of Communication. Mr. Nayak comes with good industry experience in designing and implementing various successful marketing and advertising campaigns for global audiences. He has six years’ industry experience as a copywriter and marketing communications professional for multi-nationals, software firms, market research firms, consumer goods companies and educational institutions. His career accomplishments include being featured as one of the 110 international marketers (and the only Indian) whose online to be featured in Marketing Sherpa’s Yearly Wisdom Report 2007.
 
Ms Laxmi Shenoy
Laxmi Shenoy holds an MS in Mass Communication with the specialization in Corporate Communication from Manipal Institute of Communication. She has hands on experience in event management, and comes with sound industry experience in managing events and public relations. She has secured training from Headlines Today and DNA and has also worked with Film Society, Bangalore.
 
Visiting Faculty
 
Adam Clapham - has worked at BBC Television for over twenty years as a director, becoming the senior executive producer in its documentaries department. He was awarded an Imperial Relations Trust bursary to study media in India and a Leverhulme scholarship for research in Sri Lanka. He is the author of “As Nature Intended”, a pictorial history of the nudists, and “Beware Falling Coconuts”.

Mr John Thomas – former news editor at Deccan Herald, AFP, & Reuters; former editor of Vijay Times and Statesman, founding member of ACJ, vice dean of IIJNM and ISB&M. Currently chair at EMDI Institute of Media and Communication.

Mr Nandagopal – former journalist at Asian Age and Times of India with 14 years of experience, and is a media activist. He is the Convener of Centre for Integrated Learning.

Mr Aniisu Verghese – An MBA twelve years of experience in Internal Communication. Currently he is India Internal Communications Lead at Sapient. He has rich experience with Leo Burnett, Saatchi & Saatchi, i-flex solutions and Accenture. He has won several employee communication awards and writes regularly for management and industry publications. Aniisu is passionate about engaging fellow communication practitioners through workshops and presentations. Outside of work, he runs Friends for Life, a road safety NGO and is a visiting faculty at leading business schools in South India.

Besides, a number of practicing media persons from Mangalore, Bangalore, and Mumbai.
