Rules and Regulations
General Time Table
1. Since a sense of order is necessary for intense, assiduous study, everyone needs to strictly adhere to the common timetable. Timetable brings order into one’s life, helps in effective time management and promotes a fair sense of predictability and planning. In a house of study, since we have to live with others, a common order has to be strictly followed by all the students. Arbitrary life style cannot promote hard work and industriousness. The General time table is given below.

2. Silence: Absolute silence at the prescribed hours is necessary for fruitful study so that every student can concentrate on the work at hand. Absolute silence should be maintained within the hostel during the following hours till 7.15 am 8.30 am to 10 am 10.30 am to 12 pm 2 to 3.30 pm 6.15 to 7.45 pm 8.45 pm onwards Spiritual Formation The Hostel lays a great emphasis on the spiritual formation of all the students.

3. Holy Eucharist: The Hostel has a responsibility to cater to the spiritual needs of the Catholic students. Twice a week Mass is organized in the Hostel at 6.30 am on every Thursdays and Fridays. Daily mass is celebrated in the College Chapel at 6.30 am. All the Catholic students are encouraged to attend daily Mass whenever possible. On Sundays all the Catholic students are expected to attend the Mass in the College Chapel either at 6.30 am or at 8 am. The Catholic students of the Hostel will take up the responsibility to organize the 6.30 Mass on Sundays in the College Chapel.

4. Rosary and Inter-religious Prayer service: All the Catholic students are expected to join for the Rosary at 8.45 pm every day. From Monday to Thursday, a short inter-religious prayer service is conducted for the staff and for the students in the Prayer Hall at 8.45 pm and for I PUC in the study hall at 8.45pm. Students, irrespective of the religion they follow, are welcome to attend this short prayer service. The Prayer Hall is an inter-religious space. The inmates are encouraged to spend some time everyday in the Prayer Hall and relish the silence and experience the serenity.

5. Study: The primary purpose of the Hostel is to provide the students a conducive atmosphere to engage in assiduous and diligent study. The students are to help in creating an environment that is apt for academic, intellectual hard work. The students need to develop a disciplined lifestyle in order to achieve the best results possible.

6. The hours allotted for study are to be utilized effectively. To enable this students are asked to maintain absolute silence during study hours in the Study Hall, in living rooms and on the corridors. Unnecessary movements inside and outside the living quarters during study hours is strictly prohibited.

7. Everyone is expected to be at his desk at prescribed study hours. Any delays or absences have to be authorized by the Hostel authorities. Unauthorized absences indicate a lack of interest in study and students who show such an attitude repeatedly may be asked to leave the Hostel.

8. I PUC students are expected to study in the Study Hall at all study hours. Others will study in their own rooms. No one should be found in others’ rooms without reason and without permission. Combined study and mutual consultation has to be done in the space provided for the purpose.

9. No one is allowed to make or receive phone calls during study hours. Use of mobile phones is strictly forbidden during study hours and after 11pm. Mobiles will be confiscated and will be returned to the parents at the end of the year if anyone is found listening to music or playing with or talking over the mobile phone during study and other restricted hours.

10. Sundays and holidays are not meant for fun and entertainment. Students are expected to put in substantial amount of time in studies on such days.

11. All should keep their rooms unlocked and the latch unfastened during study hours. The Director, Warden and the sub-wardens will visit rooms regularly to facilitate good study atmosphere.

12. Games stop at 5.45 pm and all should finish bathing by 6.15 pm. Going to the gym or being on the playground after the above timings is not permitted. Those who are athletes, players and are in the College teams, those who are involved in college activities and will be late for evening studies, should give a written note informing the authorities the reasons for such delay. The letter has to be countersigned by the concerned staff member with his seal. College Attendance

13. The primary reason for your stay here is education. Therefore all are expected to attend the classes regularly. Prior permission from the Director has to be obtained to absent oneself from classes. Regular absences without prior permission will be taken seriously and such students may be asked to leave the Hostel. All the leave notes for absences from classes have to be signed by the Director alone. Leave of Absence

14. No one is allowed to stay outside the Hostel without prior permission of the Director. For overnight stay, students are ought to fill the forms for such purpose. Such forms are available at the Hostel Office. Duly filled forms are to be signed by the Director and are to be returned to the Office. An entry of such permitted leave is made in a Register kept in the Director’s office. Students are expected to sign the register once they are back at the Hostel. Failure or delay in signing the register will be considered as unauthorized absence.

15. Special permission is necessary to stay back in the hostel during the midterm holidays and during the summer vacation.

16. Students are encouraged to stay at home during the revision holidays.

17. No one is allowed to go out of the Hostel after 6 pm without the explicit permission of the Hostel authorities. 18. After the final examinations are over, all should vacate their rooms within 24 hours and take all their belongings along with them. Rooms and personal belongings

19. Students will share a room as per the capacity of the room. Students therefore should learn to adjust and live in the Hostel. The room is to be considered as one’s own and is to be taken care with love.

20. Everyone has to hand over a spare key of his room to the Hostel Office at the beginning of the year and when the students change the lock of their rooms.

21. The students are asked not to possess valuables. Safeguarding one’s own personal belongings is the sole responsibility of the concerned student. While the Management will take enough precautions to prevent thefts, the individual is expected to take up the responsibility of keeping safe his valuable belongings. One of the ways to prevent thefts is not to indulge in entertaining others in one’s room. Persons indulging in thefts will be dismissed from the Hostel immediately.

22. Students of a particular room will be responsible for any damage caused in the room. Breakages of switch-boards, lights, windows, doors etc will have to be paid by the students themselves.

23. Breakages in common places and of common things will be paid for by all the students of the block.

24. The students should inform the Director or the Warden of any repairs that are necessary. No one shall tamper with the electrical wiring, lights and switches.

25. The furniture should not be shifted from one room to another.

26. Willful damage to furniture or property and tampering with electrical fittings will be considered as a serious misconduct.

27. No poster of any kind is allowed to be pasted and nailed on the walls of the room.

28. Use of heaters, irons, transistors, TVs, computers and other gadgets in the rooms is not permitted. Such items will be confiscated and will never be returned.

29. Only those students whose studies/subjects demand regular use of computers will be permitted to use laptops or PCs. Only the student having the necessary permission can use the computer. Computer should be used only for academic purpose and not for entertainment. Permission will be withdrawn in case of misuse of the computer. Usage of the speakers and printers is strictly prohibited. Monthly Rs 100 will be charged for the use of laptops and Rs 200 for the use of PC/desktops. Matters of Discipline

30. Chatting, shouting or speaking in a loud voice in the Study Hall, in the living rooms or in other’s rooms, on the corridors, and near the toilets is to be avoided.

31. Visiting others’ rooms for chat, recreation is not permitted. Even if it is required to visit due to any unavoidable circumstances, such visit should not be prolonged more than a minute or two.

32. Nobody, except the Hostel students, Hostel officials and the Hostel employees, is permitted to visit living rooms. Students are strictly forbidden to bring outsiders into the living quarters. The guests (parents, guardians, friends, relatives, etc) are to be entertained only in the visitors’ room/parlor.

33. Visitors, including the parents and relatives are permitted to visit the students only in the parlor between 4pm to 6pm. No visitor is allowed inside the Hostel premises after 6 pm.

34. Running, playing inside the living quarters is strictly forbidden.

35. No permissions are given orally in the Hostel. To seek permission, students should write a note and get it signed by the concerned official. Students should preserve such a note until the need persists. This applies to all permissions, however trivial they may be.

36. All the students should carry their identity cards at all times and produce it when demanded by the Hostel authorities.

37. St Aloysius College Gents Hostel is a home away from home for all. Therefore courtesy and politeness should be the hallmarks of every student in the Hostel. All are expected to treat the Hostel authorities with respect. Open defiance of the authorities will be considered as a grave offence.

38. Students are expected to treat each other with respect and politeness. Indulging in physical fights, oral altercations, violent behavior will never be tolerated.

39. Smoking, use of narcotic drugs, tobacco in any form, possession and consumption of alcohol, etc are strictly forbidden. Offenders will be dismissed immediately.

40. Possession of pornographic books, magazines, CD/DVDs and any such material is a grave offence. Students are not to possess any magazine of non-academic interest.

41. No excursion or picnic should be organized by the hostel students. They are not permitted to participate in any excursion or picnic organized by any other party. Written request from the parents and explicit permission of the Director of the Hostel is necessary.

42. It is forbidden to indulge in lending and borrowing money or other things. If someone lends or borrows money, it is at his own risk and no complaint would be entertained in this regard and the Management will not take up the duty of arbitration.

43. It is absolutely forbidden to go to the sea for swimming and for picnics. The Management will not be held responsible for any ensuing tragedy. Written approval from parents is required if someone wishes to go for training in swimming.

44. Hostel students are not permitted to possess and use motorized vehicles even outside the campus. The Hostel management will not be held responsible for any accidents or any untoward incidents.

45. Students are not allowed to either sit or gather near the auto rickshaw stand near the Court road.

46. Students should keep the handbook with them at all times. They ought to produce it upon demand by the Hostel authorities. Payments of the monthly mess bills will have to be recorded in the handbook and duly signed by the Director/Warden. New handbooks will be given upon paying Rs 50. Cleanliness and Eco-friendliness Keeping the Hostel premises clean and tidy is the responsibility of every individual in the Hostel. Cleanliness is next to Godliness and therefore we strive to keep our surroundings spick and span.

47. Rooms should be kept very clean and tidy. Clothes, footwear should not be thrown around. There will be regular inspection of the rooms. Students are expected to sweep and mop the rooms at regular intervals.

48. Waste materials should not be thrown on the corridor but should be disposed into the dust bins provided for the purpose.

49. Students should not throw plastic materials, wrappers, paper materials and other waste materials through the window. It is not the behavior expected of educated gentlemen.

50. Saving water and electricity saves environment. The students of the Hostel are encouraged to be eco-friendly by saving water and electricity. Lights and fans are to be switched off when not in use. Keeping the lights and fans on while not being in the room is a punishable offence. Water is to be used sparingly. Students are requested to report any water leakage immediately. Recreation and Games

51. Students are allowed to watch TV News everyday from 7.45 pm to 8.45 pm. in Faber Hall. A film is screened once a week in the Dining room at 8.45pm. Film to be screened has to be approved by the Director.

52. Essential games materials are provided by the Hostel. Due care is to be taken to return the materials immediately after the games.

53. Indoor games like Carom, table tennis can be played in the Faber Hall during the following hours:

Sickness and Percautions
54. All students should take good care of themselves. Students are discouraged from eating unhealthy foods outside the Hostel.

55. All cases of sickness should be reported to the Hostel authorities immediately. The students should take care of their roommates in cases of sickness and take responsibility to inform the Hostel authorities.

56. All are expected to use the mosquito net compulsorily.
 
Food and Kitchen
57. The Hostel serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. Students are free to choose either of them in the beginning of the year. A change from one to another can be done only at the beginning of the year and in November. Application should be handed over to the Warden at least three days before the end of the above mentioned months. Exceptions will be given only in special cases.

58. No students are allowed to enter the kitchen without the permission of the warden. Entry and exit to the dining room is only through the designated door and not through the kitchen.

59. No outsider is allowed to eat in the Hostel without the prior permission of the Director/Warden. Students are asked to carry their identity cards to the dining room to prevent outsiders from eating in the hostel and also to indicate the choice of meals they have opted for.
 
61. The Meal timings are as follows:

60. Good behavior, courtesy and sensitivity towards others and towards the kitchen staff in particular is expected from all the students during meals. While taking meals all are expected to be in queue, patient and cooperative so that the meals are served efficiently and at a faster pace.

62. All are expected to deal with the kitchen staff with due respect and courtesy
 
Hostel Mess Bills
63. Mess bills of the month will be displayed on the 1st of next month. Students can pay the mess bill without any fine till 15th of that month, after which Rs 10 will be charged as fine.

64. Bill deductions are possible only in the absence of continuous 7 days.

65. To pay the mess bill the students should go to the accountant directly to get the challan. The students should check that the challan is duly filled. No corrections are to be done in the challan after it is filled. Any malpractice in paying the bill or any manipulation will be treated as a case of cheating and fraud.

66. Students who are eligible for mess bill deduction should approach the Director for the same.

67. Students should return the ‘Hostel copy’ of the challan to the office on the same day of the payment. Entry into Hostel Record book is done only after the challan copy is returned. Any delay will incur Rs 10 fine per day.

68. The monthly mess bill includes total amount spent on food, salary of the staff, electricity, generator, water, etc. While Rs 530 (water – Rs 80, electricity – Rs 210, and establishment fee – Rs 240) remain constant for all (even if absent for the whole month), food bills will be divided equally among all depending on one’s choice of food and on one’s absence/presence in the Hostel.
 
Fees
69. Hostel fees are to be paid in the beginning of the year in one installment. Only those who have obtained due permission can pay the required amount in second installment.

70. If someone wishes to leave the hostel during the year or is expelled from the Hostel, no claim could be made for the reimbursement of the Establishment fee. Fee once paid can never be claimed back under any circumstances. The refundable deposit of Rs 500 will be reimbursed only after vacating the room and if any damage is done to the hostel property double the amount of the repairs will be claimed from the person.

71. All financial transactions are to be done through DD or through the prescribed bank. No payment will be received through hard cash, money order or through cheques. The DD should be drawn in favour of THE WARDEN, St Aloysius College Gents Hostel, Mangalore.

72. The Annual Hostel Day expenses are shared equally by all the Hostel students.
 
Dismissals
In the following cases, students will be dismissed from the Hostel with immediate effect, having no recourse for representation and justification.

1.Ragging: Ragging is a criminal offence. Those who indulge in ragging or encourage those who do, even for fun or in a friendly way, in any form, inside the campus or outside the campus, will be dismissed immediately both from the Hostel and from the College and an official complaint will be lodged with the Police by the Management. No justification of any kind or pleading innocent on any ground will be acceptable in this regard.

2.Those who repeatedly get involved in conflicts or are the cause of conflicts in the Hostel or outside.

3.Those who indulge in physical fights and thefts.

4.Those who indulge in the destruction of hostel property.

5.Those who are absent at night without prior permission, those who are absent from the Hostel during study hours even after repeated warnings and those who entertain outsiders in the living rooms.

6.Those who indulge in open defiance of the official staff and the kitchen staff.

7.Those who are caught consuming alcohol and drugs.

8.Those who are suspended or dismissed from the College.
