Tips for Parents
Dear Parents,

Please understand that your son is experiencing a life of transition, a stage of crisis and opportunity. Sometimes he behaves like a child but in truth he struggles to become an adult. He has a great desire and impulse to be independent; he demands autonomy. He does not like too much interference or pampering from elders. To be considered as a hero is an attractive proposal to him. Occasionally he seems to be contradictory and nonsensical, but one needs a lot of compassion to understand his struggle to become an adult.

Please understand that your son is under a lot of pressure from all sides - pressure from your high expectations of him, pressure of being an adolescence, peer-group pressure, pressure of self-awareness, bodily changes, and romantic attraction, pressure caused by the consumerist society and media in particular. You need to be extremely compassionate and patient with him and understand his fast changing moods and idiosyncrasies.

The Hostel has a Prayer Room. Please encourage your son to spend some time daily in the Prayer Hall and attend the inter-religious prayer service from 8.45 to 9 pm. The Catholic students have Holy Mass at 6.30 am and Rosary at 8.45 pm.

While mobile phones are convenient means of fast communication, there is a real danger that they might become toys for entertainment. A lot of time can be wasted in playing with the mobile, listening to music, etc. Please communicate with your son only between 7.45 to 8.45 pm. Mobiles used during the study hours and in the rooms will be confiscated and will be given back only at the end of the term.

While you might be sending your son the required amount promptly to pay the monthly bills, the amount may not get paid to the bank at all. Please check in the Office regularly if the monthly bills have been paid. Please do not give large sums to your son as pocket money. Teach him to be responsible and demand accountability for the money given.

Please keep a track of his academic performance. Please visit his teachers and the concerned authorities in the College to keep an eye on his marks. Demand reasonable hard work from him but do not put unreasonable pressure on him to perform more than what he is capable of. When you visit him in the Hostel, make it a point to meet the Director or the Warden in Director’s absence.
