St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Aloysius Gonzaga (Luigi Gonzaga, 1568-1591) was born into a princely Italian family who gave up his right to the title of Marquis of Castiglione and the privileges that came with it for a life of service to the poor and suffering. When he was as young as seven years old, St. Aloysius was attracted to prayer and in 1583 he had experience through prayer that convinced him that he should lead a life dedicated to prayer and service of the suffering. He gave up his inheritence in favour of his brother and joined the Jesuit Order.

In the year 1591 when plague and famine struck Rome, he begged for alms and physically involved himself to care for the afflicted. In the process contacted the plague and he died soon after, when he was just 23 years old.

His integrity of life, his inner strength, his noble ideals, his self discipline, his immense compassion and his tremendous concern for the poor are held up for emulation by our students.
