Laboratory of Applied Biology
The Laboratory of Applied Biology was started in 1975 at St Joseph’s College, Bangalore. The aim of the Laboratory was to work at large scale propagation of some important plants of South India. The Laboratory was set up with seed money given by the Max Planck Institute, Cologne, Germany and other German friends. The Lab was one of the 18 Laboratories recognized by the Department of Science and Technology for Tissue Culture work. Work was done with Coconut, Cashew, Sandal wood, and Mulberry. In 1980, the Laboratory with its equipment was transferred to St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

The Laboratory of Applied Biology (LAB) is now the research unit of St Aloysius College. The LAB was doing research mainly in tissue culture but since 1999 has a special unit ( Dr Küppers biotech unit) for molecular studies.  With starting of the Department of Biotechnology in 2002, the LAB has been made a part of the Department of Biotechnology as its research unit. The LAB is recognized by the Mangalore University for research leading to Ph.D.
