St Aloysius College Launches Prakrit Certificate Programme

The Department of History, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) has launched a Prakrit Language Certificate Programme on 7th October, 2023. 


The College has taken an initiative to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with The National Institute of Prakrit Studies and Research (NIPSAR) Shravanabelagola. This collaboration aims to preserve Prakrit an ancient language spoken in India during 500 BCE to 800 CE, which evolved into Hindi, Bengali, Assame, Odia, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani etc. and now almost out of use.


Mr Lokakumar, the Registrar of NIPSAR inaugurated the event and enlightened the students on the objectives and goals of this course. Dr Rajendra Patel Shastri, the HOD of Prakrit (NIPSAR) was present on the occasion.

Principal Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, stressed the importance of preserving the ancient languages. Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Registrar and Dr Charles Furtado, Director of Admin Block and Mr Kishore Chandra, Assistant Professor of Department of History were present.

The Prakrit students of Govinda Das College, Suratkal along with their course Coordinator Dr Vijayalaxmi Nayak participated in this programme.

Dr Mona Mendonca, Head, Department of History along with Ms Ankita, the student coordinator, took the initiative to launch the first ever Prakrit Course in the College. Ms Anagha compered the programme. Ms Yukta welcomed the gathering and Ms Soubhagya proposed the vote of thanks.
